Nobody wants to walk out of a salon looking like a streaky carrot. Getting that 'just got back from Bali' bronze isn't magic. It's pretty simple, but people mess it up all the time. The secret to a flawless, long-lasting glow comes down to three basic phases. Prepping your skin, surviving the cold spray tent, and not ruining the colour the second you get home.
If you skip the prep, the tan clings to dry patches and looks filthy. If you botch the aftercare, it cracks like a desert in three days. Here is the exact, no-nonsense routine to nail your first professional spray tan.
The Prep: 48 Hours Before
You need a completely blank canvas. Fake tan loves to grab onto dry, dead skin. If you don't scrub it off, your expensive glow will flake away into your bedsheets as those cells naturally shed.
Scrub Everything: Grab a heavy-duty exfoliating mitt. Go to town on your knees, ankles, elbows, and knuckles. Do this a couple of days out so your skin has time to calm down.
Sort Your Hair Removal: Shave or wax yesterday. Doing it the morning of your appointment is a massive rookie error. The tanning liquid settles right into those open pores, leaving you with dark, speckled 'strawberry' legs. Not sure which method suits which area? Our hard wax vs. soft wax guide breaks it down.
Ditch the Barriers: Show up bare. Wash off your makeup. Don’t wear moisturiser. Definitely no deodorant. Seriously, antiperspirant reacts with the active tanning ingredients and turns your armpits a lovely shade of radioactive green.
The Application: Inside the Tent
Stripping down in front of a stranger always feels weird the first time. But your beauty therapist does this all day and just wants to make sure you don't leave with white patches.
Communicate Your Shade: Speak up. Do you want a subtle winter tint or a deep, dark holiday bronze? They’ll custom-mix a green, violet, or ash base so you don't pull orange.
Use the Barrier Cream: The salon will hand you a thick lotion. Slather a light layer over your fingernails, toenails, and the palms of your hands. Orange cuticles are a dead giveaway.
Wear Loose, Dark Clothes: Bring the ugliest, baggiest clothes you own. Oversized tracksuit, a massive dark tee, and slides are perfect. A tight sports bra, socks, or leggings will instantly rub a giant stripe right through your fresh colour before it even develops.
The Maintenance: Making it Last
You just paid good money for this, so don't wash it down the drain on day two.
The First Rinse: Watch the clock. When your tech says wait four hours, wait exactly four hours, then jump in a lukewarm shower. No soap or aggressive loofahs. Just watch the murky brown guide colour wash away until the water runs clear. Step out and gently pat yourself dry. Rubbing is a death sentence for your tan.
Hydrate Constantly: Dry skin means a patchy fade. Slather yourself in a rich, oil-free moisturiser every single day to lock that colour in.
Top it up: Around day four or five, the colour naturally drops. Swap your normal lotion for a gradual tanning milk to stretch that bronze out a few more days.
Avoid the Pool: Skip the chlorine. Long hot baths, heavy gym sweats, and swimming pools will strip the colour off you faster than anything else. Keep them to an absolute minimum if you want the tan to survive the week.
